What Does Hitooshi's First Interview Ask? A User Explains the Questions, Flow, and Preparation

Hello! I'm @Ryo54388667!☺️

Until a little while ago, I was actually a user of the marriage-hunting service "Hitooshi."

So this time, based on my own experience, I'm going to share what you're asked in Hitooshi's first interview, along with the flow up to the day, how to prepare, and dress-code tips!

"What will they ask me in the interview?" "What if I answer something weird and get rejected?" — I think a lot of people freeze up right before applying. I was exactly the same😅

This article is written for people like:

  • Those who want to know what they'll be asked before booking Hitooshi's first interview
  • Those who want to know what they can prepare before the interview
  • Those who are new to online (Zoom) interviews and feel uneasy about the dress code and how it goes

By the time you finish reading, I hope you'll think "oh, I don't need to brace myself this much." Let's get into it!

Hitooshi's first interview is about 45 minutes on Zoom. A matching planner hears about your personality and ideal partner, and together you nail down "what kind of person to introduce." The interview itself is free.

The key point is that the interview isn't a test or a high-pressure job interview. It's an "alignment session" to introduce you to compatible people, so basically you just need to talk honestly about yourself. Let me get into the specifics below.

What Kind of Session Is Hitooshi's First Interview?

#

Let me set the stage a bit first.

Hitooshi is an online-completed marriage-hunting service where a person called a matching planner introduces you to likely-compatible partners. The nice thing is that you don't need to embellish a profile or send "likes" every day.

The very first step is this first interview. It's easiest to think of it as the time when the planner hears your wishes and values and decides the matching direction — "okay, next time I'll introduce someone like this."

One thing to add: the interview itself is free. Once you actually enroll and start your activities, costs kick in from there, so at the "just hearing them out" stage there's no charge.

If you're curious about the fee breakdown (enrollment fee, monthly fee, total-cost simulation), I've written about it in detail in my separate Hitooshi pricing summary, so check that out too!

What Does Hitooshi's First Interview Ask?

#

This is the main topic. Looking back at what I was actually asked in the interview, the content was roughly as follows.

  • Personality / self-analysis (what kind of personality you think you have)
  • Future vision (where you want to be in 10 years, what kind of household you want to build)
  • Your ideal partner and the values you cherish
  • Work, hobbies, and lifestyle
  • Past relationships and the challenges in them
  • Conditions for your partner (age, income, height, education, facial preferences, etc.)

"Whoa, they ask all this?" you might be thinking😅 Don't worry. Going through them one by one, they're not as hard as they look. I'll explain in order, with tips.

Personality / Self-Analysis

#

The first thing I was asked was about my personality. They opened with something close to a self-introduction: "What type do you think you are?"

You don't need to wrap it up neatly. A rough self-image like "shy but talkative once I warm up" or "people often say I'm easygoing" is plenty for the planner to pick up on.

A tip: be honest about your "slightly clumsy parts" too, not just your strengths. The planner is asking in order to find "someone who fits you," so being genuine rather than polishing yourself leads to a better introduction in the end.

Your Vision for 10 Years From Now and the Household You Want to Build

#

Next came the image of the future. Questions like "Where do you want to be in 10 years?" and "What kind of household is ideal?"

Honestly, this is where I got stuck the most. "Uh, 10 years from now… I've never really thought about it…" I thought to myself😇

But you don't need to lay out a perfect life plan here. A fuzzy wish like "I'd like a relationship where we can relax together on weekends" or "I want us both to respect each other's work as a dual-income couple" was fine. What matters more is conveying the direction of your values.

Your Ideal Partner and the Values You Cherish

#

This may be the most important part, directly tied to matching accuracy.

They ask "what kind of atmosphere do you want in a person?" and "what kind of partner do you find ideal to be with?" My impression was that they carefully pick up the qualitative parts — like "I feel at ease with this person" — more than specs.

A tip: rather than listing conditions as bullet points, convey it as a scene — "I want someone who makes me feel this way in moments like these." It makes it easier for the planner to picture.

Work, Hobbies, and Lifestyle

#

They also ask everyday things: what work you do now, and what you do on your days off.

In my case, I honestly said "I'm an engineer, so I often study tech even on weekends." Sharing this makes it easier to be introduced to people with a similar rhythm and values, so being yourself is the way to go.

Past Relationships and the Challenges in Them

#

It might be a slightly nerve-wracking question, but they also ask lightly about past relationships.

This isn't about prying; I felt it's to grasp "what type you tend to stumble on" and use it in introductions so you don't repeat the same mistakes.

They won't dig into things you don't want to talk about, so it's fine to answer within your comfort range. Even something like "matching apps didn't last for me" is something the planner will pick up on properly.

Conditions for Your Partner (Age, Income, Height, Education, Facial Preferences)

#

Finally, the concrete conditions. I was asked about age, income, height, education, and also facial preferences and so on.

Here, I think it's a part where you can be honest without holding back too much. That said, piling on conditions quickly narrows down who can be introduced, so conveying them in two tiers — "absolute must-haves" and "nice-to-haves" — made it easier for the planner to work.

The Flow Up to the Day (From Application to the Interview)

#

Now that you know what you're asked, let me also lay out the flow from application to the interview.

  1. Apply: apply for the interview from the official website or official LINE
  2. Fill out the pre-interview questionnaire: enter your occupation, hobbies, conditions, relationship background, future vision, etc.
  3. Zoom interview (about 45 min): the planner hears you out based on the questionnaire
  4. Enroll / introductions start: if things come together, you enroll and introductions begin

The point is that the interview proceeds on the foundation of this pre-interview questionnaire. In other words, the more properly you fill out the questionnaire, the smoother the interview on the day.

For how things proceed after the interview — actual partner introductions and the online meeting — I've written in detail in my Hitooshi review article, so if you want the full picture, check that out too!

What's Good to Prepare Before Hitooshi's Interview

#

I think there's also the question "what should I prepare?", so let me put together a pre-interview checklist.

  • Fill out the pre-interview questionnaire properly (the day's flow is decided here)
  • Roughly organize your wishes and relationship background (a memo level is fine)
  • Have a photo ID ready (driver's license, passport, etc.)
  • Check your Zoom connection and line in advance (do a test connection once if it's your first time)
  • Secure a quiet, well-lit place
  • Give yourself room to enter about 10 minutes early on the day

Especially the first one, "organize your wishes," is quietly effective. If you go in vague, it's harder for the planner to grasp what kind of person to look for, so it's worth spending a little time just on this.

Let me also touch on documents lightly. What Hitooshi requires you to submit is a photo ID (driver's license or passport) and a signature on a declaration of singleness (a form the company specifies — you don't need to prepare it yourself). These two are mandatory documents that every member submits, so there's no avoiding them if you enroll.

Conversely, documents like a family-register-based certificate of singleness, income certificates, or graduation certificates are said to be unnecessary. At a typical marriage agency, gathering these documents is quite a hassle, so being able to start with just a photo ID was a low-barrier, welcome point☺️

What Should You Wear for Hitooshi's Interview?

#

Clothing is a surprisingly nagging concern. "A suit? Is casual okay?" I wondered at first too.

To put the conclusion first, there's no official dress code for Hitooshi's interview. You don't need to show up in a stiff suit.

That said, there is enrollment screening, so it's reassuring to keep a minimum of neatness in mind. Specifically:

  • A collared or smart-casual top for your upper body looks good on camera
  • Be in a bright place so your face is clearly visible
  • Don't join with bed-head hair

Also, this is more about mindset than clothing, but online your own face stays on screen the whole time, so you might be a bit more nervous than in person😅 I checked just my camera framing and background beforehand, and on the day I was able to talk fairly calmly. If you're concerned, testing how you look once beforehand is reassuring.

Tips for Taking Hitooshi's Interview Easy

#

Finally, something I want to tell people who are about to take the interview.

When you hear "interview," you tend to tense up thinking "I have to answer well so I don't get rejected," but this isn't an interview meant to weed people out. It's time to align your wishes so you can be introduced to compatible people.

So the biggest tip is to talk honestly. Even if you stretch yourself and play an idealized version of you, if introductions proceed based on that persona, it ends up being a mismatch for both sides.

I'm an ordinary office worker who's hard to call high-spec, but just talking as my natural self led to proper introductions. So you can relax your shoulders and go in☺️

Conclusion

#

I've summed up Hitooshi's first interview based on my own experience. Here are the key points!

  • The interview is about 45 minutes on Zoom, can be taken before enrolling, and the interview itself is free
  • What you're asked: personality, future vision, ideal partner, values, work and hobbies, past relationships, and conditions
  • On the day it proceeds on the pre-interview questionnaire, so the questionnaire and organizing your wishes are key
  • No dress code; just be mindful of online-appropriate neatness
  • It's not an interview to weed people out, so being honest is best in the end

Once the worry of "I don't know what they'll ask" is gone, I don't think the interview itself is something to brace for that much. If you're interested, taking a free interview to hear them out first might be the fastest way to resolve your doubts!
